HOW IT'S MADE

Henk Jan Sanderman (1975) is a visual artist known for his humorous and idiosyncratic porcelain and bronze sculptures. With a keen eye for detail and a playful approach to form and meaning, he transforms the mundane into something surprising and poetic.

His work lies at the intersection of ceramics and sculpture. He creates both wall sculptures on canvas and standing sculptures, often featuring animals. A wink lurks within each piece—a subtle irony that invites both a smile and a reflection.

What also makes his work special is that he controls the entire process himself. From the initial sculpting to the firing of the porcelain and the casting of the bronze in his own workshop: each piece bears his signature, both literally and figuratively. This dedication to craftsmanship gives his sculptures a unique authenticity.

Thematically, Henk Jan explores the lightness of being, human idiosyncrasies, and the fine line between seriousness and humor. His images sometimes seem to jump from the canvas or dance in space — airy, yet with a solid foundation in craftsmanship and mastery of materials.
